Recent GHL Projects

GHL Consultants performs structural and civil engineering design for a wide variety of projects, including highway bridges, tunnels, industrial buildings, and waterfront structures. We also perform structural plan review, code compliance, and constructability reviews for both buildings and bridges. The following list encapsulates some recent commissions and consulting work.

  • Transit Shed Apron, Pier 66, Port of Seattle
GHL Consultants performed an elaborate structural analysis to obtain the optimum design for a 40,000 square foot pile-supported concrete dock. Detailed CAD drawings and contract specifications were completed during the design phase of the project. GHL was retained to provide construction support services to ensure successful completion of the construction.

  • Link Rail, Sound Transit Regional Transportation Authority
As a member of the Puget Sound Transit Consultants design team, GHL is developing conceptual and preliminary structural design for aerial guideways and other structures. To date, GHL has contributed to the conceptual, preliminary, and final design of large portions of the overall Link Rail Alignment, including the following segments:
    • Aerial and retained-cut structures from Northgate to tunnel portal near 75th St.
    • Underground structures from 45th Street Station in the University District to the Broadway neighborhood.
    • Aerial structures for segment from International District to East of I-5.
    • Other segments of the project from Boeing Access south to the Tacoma Line segment and stations.

  • Cedar Grove Bridge Seismic Retrofit, King County Department of Public Works
Complete analysis and design for a seismic retrofit aimed at improving the earthquake load resistance of the bridge. Solution included cable restrainers and stop blocks for the bridge superstructure and other strengthening of the substructures. GHL Consultants provided support services during bidding and construction.

  • Structural Design of the Foundations for the Retractable Roof Runway Structures, Safeco Field
    Retractable Roof Runway Structure
    Retractable Roof Runway Structure

As a contributing member to a design team, GHL consultants provided the structural design for the foundations of the runway structures that support the stadium's retractable roof system. The task included preparing the structural design of typical piles for the project, including the concrete-filled steel pipe piles, concrete caps, and concrete slabs.

  • Regional Transit Project (RTP)—North Corridor
As a contributing member of a METRO design team, GHL Consultants prepared drawings for alignment and profiles of the RTP's light-rail segment stretching from the Convention Center Station in downtown Seattle to Everett. Tunnel locations, cut and cover stations, and aerial structures were identified.

  • Silver Cloud Inns, Mukilteo and Tacoma, WA
    Mukilteo Silver Cloud Inn
    Mukilteo Silver Cloud Inn

GHL Consultants prepared structural design and bid drawings for two three-story 100-room hotels. Each building is designed with auger-cast pile foundations and a concrete first story. The buildings were typically designed with structural steel floor framing with metal deck and concrete at the second floor and timber flooring at the third level and roof. Construction of the Mukilteo Silver Cloud Inn is complete; the Tacoma Silver Cloud Inn is under construction during the Spring of 2001.

  • Tolt Replacement Bridge, King County Department of Public Works
Initial preliminary phase of project consisted of a type, size, and location (TSL) study prepared by GHL Consultants. Preliminary and final designs will follow.

  • Diablo Access Road Bridges, Seattle City Light
GHL designed the repairs and rehabilitation of two existing bridges on the Diablo Dam Access Road located in Whatcom County for Seattle City Light. Work has been successfully completed and both bridges are in service.
